Join members of the Local Organising Committee on Friday the 13th of January to explore Hobart and our surroundings.

The below tours are available for Symposium delegates to book at an additional cost, where applicable. Prices are in Australian Dollars and include GST. Please note tours have capped numbers and are available on a “first come, first served basis”. Some tours also require minimum numbers to be met to proceed.

Pennicott Wilderness Journeys - Tasman Island Wilderness Cruise

The full day tour includes return guided bus transport, three hour Tasman Island Cruise, morning tea, and lunch. The pricing is per adult.

The cruise travels beneath the highest vertical sea cliffs in the Southern Hemisphere at Cape Pillar. Guests explore waterfalls, rock formations, archways, and deep-sea caves.

The coastline is part of the Tasman National Park. It is home to a variety of wildlife including hundreds of seals, migrating whales and abundant sea birds in their thousands.

At any time of year, you’re likely to see the feeding frenzy of diving gannets, albatross, and sea eagles wheeling on the wind, cliff-nesting cormorants and peregrine falcons, or a pod of playful dolphins surfing the bow wave of the boat.

Leaving Fern Tree Tavern at 10 am this guided hike will take you up kunanyi / Mt Wellington for spectacular views of Hobart. The walk will take approximately 4-5 hours return, heading to the Pinnacle. The walk is ~10-12km return, but fairly steep (with an elevation gain of approximately 800m). Reasonable fitness is recommended, as are gaiters/long socks and trail shoes (plus all weather gear, and BYO water/snacks). Arguably Hobart’s best café (the Lost Freight) sits approximately 30-40 minutes from the start, along the track. The return walk will take us on a slightly different route, passing some waterfalls and ending at Cascade Brewery in South Hobart. If you do not want to participate in the return walk there is an option to book the pinnacle bus via their website.  (Guests can catch a bus from 65 Harrington Street, Hobart, underneath the Spirit Super Level 8 sign to Fern Tree Tavern.  The bus will leave at 9.45am so please be there at 9.35am for boarding.)

Post Symposium Scuba Trip - Eagle Hawk Neck

The tour includes 2 dives at two different sites on the one boat trip. The cost for 2 standard boat dives with full hire gear is $235 per diver.

Divers are to book direct but they MUST let them know they are with the conference. There is a $50.00 AUD per person deposit to confirm any bookings. All bookings can be made by email – info@eaglehawkdive.com.au – or by phone (0417 013518) (please note that prices have recently changed, and so their website is currently incorrect)

There’ll be two trips of 7 people. The first group will need to be at the dive centre at 8.15 am and will return at roughly 2.00 pm after 2 dives. The second group will need to be at the dive centre at 11.30 am, for return around 5.30 pm after 2 dives.

Eagle Hawk Dive’s PADI 5 Star Dive Centre is situated at Eaglehawk Neck on the Tasman Peninsula in southeastern Tasmania, only 1 hour from Hobart. Eaglehawk Neck is also the gateway to the spectacular Three Capes Track and the world-heritage Port Arthur historical convict settlement.

They offer a wide great diversity of world-class scuba diving in this area, including the famous Cathedral Cave, the historic wreck SS “Nord”, or the magical sponge garden at Sisters’ rocks. Or come and dive with the playful fur seals or meet the bizarre weedy seadragon, and have sites suitable for divers of all levels of experience from novice to technical.

Their staff have extensive local knowledge from thousands of hours spent diving around the Tasmanian coast, and include professional marine biologists and underwater photographers/videographers.

Our Circumnavigation cruise around Maria Island is like a theatre on the water, a totally immersive and educational experience! The east coast of Maria Island showcases world class geology, mountain-fed waterfalls, secluded bays, sea caves and beaches of pure white sand. Enjoy expert commentary from our professional scientific crew as you cruise to the renowned Riedle Bay and Shoal Bay at Maria Island’s isthmus for a lunch stop on anchor. These two stunning beaches are nearly identical to the world-famous Wineglass Bay and are only visited by a handful of people each year. En route around Maria Island, we stop to showcase many famous landmarks including the Fossil Cliffs and Painted Cliffs.

Lunch is provided on the tour from our cafe as a large healthy salad bowl. A variety of salad lunch options include; chicken breast in pesto aioli, smoked salmon, roast beef, leg ham or vegetarian/vegan.

If a salad bowl is not for you, please choose anything else from our cafe to the value of $10pp (cash refunds not given if under $10). You may use this credit to purchase salad rolls or select from our range of freshly made sandwiches for children if you wish. You are also welcome to bring your own lunch on the day. Lunch is enjoyed on the boat whilst at anchor in an idyllic remote location at Maria Island. In the afternoon, we will dock at Darlington. The perfect way to complement your cruise is to stretch your legs and enjoy a guided tour through Darlington’s fascinating collection of preserved convict buildings, learn about the town’s remarkable history and come face to face with Maria Island’s resident wombats. If history is not for you, then simply soak up the sun on Darlington’s white sandy beach or swim/snorkel in the waters of Maria Island’s marine reserve.

Beth Strain will lead a visit to the intertidal rocky shore at the Tesselated Pavement on the spectacular Tasman Peninsula.

Note that location is weather dependent. If weather conditions rule out a visit to the Tesselated Pavement, then we will select another interesting shore to visit instead – there are plenty to choose from!  The trip will take place on Friday 13th of January with the tour starting in the Hobart CBD at 7.00 AM.  Please meet underneath the Spirit Super Level 8 sign at 65 Harrington Street, Hobart at 6.55am to pull out at 7.00am.
